It's Columbus Day, Mickey Mouse!

Last night I remembered to leave cookies and milk out for Christopher Columbus. He brought me a ship in a bottle! What did he bring you? Happy Columbus Day!

Like many people, I had to work today. I did not even know today was a holiday (for some people, anyway) until I went to lunch at Subway and one of the employees told me.

In 1992, someone at Disney decided to retell the tale of Christopher Columbus with Mickey Mouse and his friends. The artwork shown above is from a (reusable) sticker book. This was sort of like a Colorforms set in book form. The book itself has no text. It's really just a backdrop for the stickers.

What is shown above is a small booklet included with the main book. This has all sorts of information about Christopher Columbus.

Shown below are some of the stickers to be used in the book. The illustrations were done by artist Phil Wilson. The characters look very much like they did in 1990's "The Prince and the Pauper."

I believe the Christopher Columbus Mickey idea was proposed as an animated feature. Maybe it was thought to be too similar-looking to "The Prince and the Pauper."

In the Disney TV series, "Darkwing Duck" (1991) there was an episode called "Whirled History" that cast the various characters in different roles. Darkwing Duck played Columbus in this particular story. Dressed as an Indian, Darkwing's neighbor, Binkie Muddlefoot, turns to her husband and says, "Oh look dear, we're being discovered!" Too funny!
