Baloo, Is That You?-Early TaleSpin at Walt Disney World

I got a HUGE foldout map of the Walt Disney World Resort back in 1990. It features a slew of characters, including the Gummi Bears, the Fox and the Hound, The Rescuers, Ducktales, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers, Roger Rabbit, Oliver and Company and some of the fair folk from The Black Cauldron.

What I remember most about this map is the image of Baloo the Bear and Molly from the (then) new TV series, TaleSpin. The show was clearly still in development when the map was being made, as the character designs and airplane are different from what was used in the show.

So here's a little nugget of fun for fans of the Disney Afternoon!

  1. Wow, I really like the artwork on this. I'm surprised to see Gyro Gearloose used on the map (or was he in the Disney Afternoon cartoons too?) Also the ranger....his name escapes me right now. And is that Hiawatha in a canoe at the bottom? Would love to see more of this map....or even the whole thing! It probably can't all be scanned at once, huh.....I know the DL maps were huge and I'm assuming the WDW ones were too.

  2. Hey TokyoMagic! You know, I had been thinking about trying to scan this thing in sections. It is gargantuan, but I'll give it a try!

Gyro was in Ducktales, but he and his little light bulb friend are separated from those characters on this map.

    That is Hiawatha there, too!

  3. Aah, TaleSpin. I remember the "Disney Afternoon" block on TV when I was a kid. Good times.

  4. Peyton, I get my TaleSpin fix on YouTube--especially for the theme song.

  6. Thanks, Darrin! This map is huge, and should provide me with Blog material for the rest of the week.;-)

  7. I forgot about Gyro's lightbulb friend....I didn't know they were both in Ducktales. I used to read Disney comic books that would feature both of them sometimes......hey, I need to go looking for those!

  8. Hey TokyoMagic!: The little Lightbulb guy was only featured in a few episodes of Ducktales. I guess he got written out of the show! Gyro was a very important character in Ducktales, though!
